I think I'd rather swim and walk. Unventilated, non air-conditioned, 50 foot box cars packed with people and lacking any type of restroom facilities? You're quite the humanitarian.

I'm not sure if boxcars are the proper equitment...perhaps some old passenger cars with the shackles. It's a real shame people are taking advantage of the situation![:(!][V][}:)][:(][*^_^*][tdn][censored]

Wait, AntiGates has those new AutoMax type shackle cars. I think they could be put to good use on the looters of the TV's, Nikes and all the worthless crap they can't use.

Now we should send some Superliners for the stranded and hurt.

Shackle Cars for Looters I say!!! 40' Youngston 8 foot door cars with friction trucks in need of oil rags.

Somehow I think that if you had family, or freinds affected by this catastrophy you wouldnt be saying "Lighten Up" from the safe confines of your still intact home...

Your lack of feelings for others who have lost everything astounds me,

Get serious, Buddy!

I think most of us here are talking about the shackle cars are meaning for the slime ball looters, and for them I have no good taste or compassion or anything that resembles humanity.

Also can we still laugh, and have fun even with a distater going on? Or am I supposed to feel depressed and gloomy until this is all fixed. If so I may die depressed.

Vic, I think it was a semi serious suggestion to help the police to deal with the looters. They have no jail space. I actually saw, on TV yesterday, a bunch of prisoners sitting on an elevated section of road in their orange coveralls, chained together, with armed guards standing near by. Kind of weird.

We'll be lucky if they don't claim that their civil rights weren't violated.

I think that today's turn of policy is rather cold. The focus should be on the living, not the looting. Just don't rescue the looters and starve them out.

Its still in Bad Taste. but whatever, not everyone likes Rob Schnieder either so....

The trouble is that they are shooting at the rescue workers who then flee leaving behind the people to be preyed on by the looters, I'm surprised there havent been "Shoot to Kill" orders issued against looters yet. That will likely happen tommorow.

Very sad and scary how little it takes before the inmates start burning down the asylum. I'm going to be stocking an earthquake survival kit now as I can see FEMA being of little help for the first 4 to 5 days after a big one, one of the items is going to be a 12ga.

I am suprised we don't see city blocks burning. I think the Miss. Govenor made some statement on the Today show about looters, not about shooting them, but something along the lines of they won't tolorate them. Once they get a handle on the survivors, I think we will then see a push of action on the looters.

We all need to really watch how all this plays out, how things are handle, how people in these situations react, good or bad. Next time it may be our town. I for one want to be better prepared.

Disaster always spawns humor, whether in good taste or not. As for the people who are looting, its hard to blame the ones getting food for their families, but some are just plain thugs, especially the ones with weapons with bad intentions. Forget the shackle boxcars, get the good people out and let them stay to rot.

Does anyone see this looting and shooting thing almost like Escape from New York or other movies in the same vein? I wonder if these ones shooting at relief and the NG are somehow thinking that they are now in control and the "new" government of NO??

Maybe the problem is they are getting too much sugar, breaking into vending machines for "food and water".

I can't stand Rob Schneider. Bill Mahr and Dennis Miller are more to my liking.

This is a really unusual situation, where an entire city needs to be evacuated. I don't think it has ever happened before in the history of this country.

The criminal element existed before the flood, but now they are more concentrated, as the so many of decent people have left. The cops are at a severe disadvantage now. When the flood water is gone, law should return.

As opposed to standing in a dome with no AC/Bathrooms, and flooded...I'd take the moving train getting me the hell out...only problem...when they went in there with fanboats trying to rescue them this morning, they were fired upon by looters withe AK-47's.

I really feel sorry for those suffering, but i've been seeing my fill of 300 lb folks crabbing about nor having eaten in 3 days, like the world should just stop for them.. Pretty selfish

I understand their frustration, but many other people are injured, and these "starving" hotheads act like the priority is theirs.

I agree with Chris in Denver, Colorado. Transporting the Katrina victims out of New Orleans and other points on the Gulf coast in 50' unventilated box cars with no toilet facilities is not the answer.

I however, see nothing wrong with locking up a lot of these scumbag looters in a hot, unventilated box car with nothing to eat or drink. Or we could tie these worthless scumbags to a few trees in the Louisiana bayous and let the alligators and bugs eat them!

I think when they find people to rescue, and while searching them, if they are armed, get a chopper and pick them up and drop them back to the beginning again to find their way back. Of course with no weapon, they can just loot another one, they should be okay at that since by now many should be very experienced at it. [:-^]

Mr. Rider,

Thank you for your suggestions regarding helping those affected by the hurricane Katrina. Amtrak and the freight railroads that own the tracks in that region are in talks right now to come up with some solutions to help get supplies in and people out of the region, although no firm plans have yet been announced. Watch our web site for any announcements about aid to those living there, or affected rail workers in that region.

Thank you again for your suggestions.

Well guys, keep in mind that this topic was something of a tongue in cheek suggestion for dealing with the criminal element during this crisis.

I heard that the rules of engagement have now changed. When fired upon, military and guard members are authorized to use deadly force. Today 5 scum bags were killed in the streets, when they fired at recovery workers.

As crazy as this might sound, that thought did cross my mind, but you have to admit it is a pretty whacky urban renewal plan. Maybe it is all part of the greater oil conspiracy. Kill two birds with one stone. Either way, it is working.

If that is correct, then why waste money on the shackle cars? I for one am outraged that we wasted money on those cars if they had another plan in action!!!

Did you forget that the right wingers did have sometype of control of the huricane, I think it's all those contrails they have been testing, as well as HARP out of Alaska.

One estimate I read said that there were 80,000 people left in NO when the storm hit.

There are a total of 1500 NO cops, and probably an equal number of firefighters, more or less. That's TOTAL, not on duty at any one time. One police official estimated that they had about 1200 on duty at one point after the storm. Even assuming that 3000 potential rescue workers were available immediately following the storm (and that's optomistic), they had no resources with which to effect the rescues of 27 (do the math) people per rescuer... Their radio system was down, can't drive a squad car or a fire truck through 4 feet of water, many were probably concerned for their own families.

As I've said elsewhere - this is not one disaster. This is two disasters, piled on top of one another. Either would have been catastrophic by itself. The two together was too much.

Use of deadly force on a few looters will get the word out that it's not an acceptable activity. The hard-core types may not stop, but the "amateurs" will probably decide it's not worth it. I can accept those who took necessities. The pictures of people leaving stores with arms full of shirts, or cases of beer, showed the types that deserve harsh punishment.
