The electrical current from the alternator,
in all cases it is then rectified to DC (just
like your automobile) if it is going to AC
motors it is then inverted back to AC current
if it is going to DC motors it is left as a
DC current. jackflash

There is no difference in the prime mover between AC and DC propulsion locomotives. The difference is the electrical system, most particularly the traction motors......

Are the traction motors currently (pardon the pun) brushless DC motors or do they still use brushes and commutators?

Brushless, it is a three phase AC motor
somewhat smaller than its DC cousin, the motor
can stall at a dead stop without damage. jackflash
