Got Out Wednesday - Felt good to Catch a Train or Three

Because of health problems have not been able to railfan since July 17th, but on Aug 24th, got to get out for a couple of hours and do what I like to do, railfan.

This was the first catch of the day, the east bound autos was waiting on Amtrak's No. 5, a late CZ to clear Sparks yard and the Reno shoo-fly. This is about 1 mile east of where I live on Union Pacific's "Overland Route."



The road in the photo is Reno's West 4th Street, for the old timers, US 40.

After getting the autos east, headed west to Verdi and then just a couple miles futher west, near the stateline. After about an hour wait caught Amtrak. Should have climbed the rocks on the other side of the tracks, but decided to take the easy wait in the car, overlooking this side of the tracks.

After catching the FIVE, was pretty tired and went home to take a nap. After an hour nap, awoke to DS74 giving the BNSF trackage right train a warrant. Jumbed in the car and headed to Mogul, NV - two miles from my house and got this after about 10 minute wait.



Decided to chase this to the signal bridge west of Verdi, NV to catch it again.



Just before getting this photo above, another railfan drove past and parked west of me. After getting my shot, thought about driving down to meet this other fan, but didn't feel up to it, instead I headed to Floriston, CA

After getting onto I-80 headed west to Floriston, CA - ran into a small traffic jam just east of Floriston, Caltrans was sweeping the sholder and everyone slowed to almost a stop. Would I get this train, or would I have to catch it at Hirshdale or Boca? Well, just as fast as the traffic jammed, it cleared - I didn't need to make that choice, took the Foriston exit beating the train by about 5 minutes.



Certainly enjoyed this first outing in almost 5 weeks, but it was time to head home for another nap!

Nice shots. Any fish in that river at Reno? A great combination would be fishing and watching trains go by.

Is that a busy line? How many trains per day?

Thanks fellows, its the Canon Digital Rebel, I think its the camera I've had the most fun with. Can't wait to regain my health and hit the road with it.

Yep, the Truckee River is a very fishable river with brown and rainbow trout. The UP rail line which sees about 17 trains a day yeilds a number of nice spots to frame trains. Daylight hours can see as few as 2 and as many as 10 trains, its not busy like the Overland route in Nebraska but it'll do.

I didn't even notice the damage to that BNSF unit until after I down loaded the photos to my computer
