Midnight Crossing

This one comes from the "Diamonds" thread...
So anyways, this shortline down south (Carolinas someplace?) wants to cross over the mainline railroad, but the mainline RR says NO! So finally, after asking a couple more times, the shortline decided that they will install a diamond across the mainline under cover of darkness, hence the name "midnight crossing".
It is my understanding that this is a true story, although I can't remember exactly where it happened or what railroads were involved, so maybe somebody else can fill in those "foggy spots". [;)]

That sort of situation has happened several times, usually involving an interurban wishing to cross a steam railroad. Variations on this theme have occurred involving the North Shore Line and Illinois Traction with steam roads.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
