From the date it probably seems like things won't go very well, right? Well, partly. We went to Fairfield, Iowa, to do some grocery shopping and a few other things. I wanted to see Amtrak (of course) and brought my video camera just in case we saw it. Then it started RAINING! I was in the car while Mom did a few things in a grocery store. I was staring at a railroad crossing gate up on the hill. I looked back in the seat and found a few fake flowers packed in a plastic bag. Hmmmm.
EUREKA!
I took the flowers out of the bag and slipped the bag over the video camera. I poked a hole for the lens and the viewfinder...everything else was under the bag. Now I would be able to record the train even if it was raining!
We went over and parked by the old station. I took a while for the train to come. Soon I could hear it in the distance, though. I got out of the car and raced over to the railroad crossing. It was still raining pretty hard, but the bag worked perfectly. Amtrak's California Zephyr went by at an unusually slow pace. The train consisted of:
P42DCs #184 and 170, phase V paint scheme
Superliner II Transition Sleeper, phase IV paint scheme
Two Superliner I Sleeping Cars, phase IVb paint scheme
Superliner I Dining Car, phase IVb paint scheme
Superliner I Sightseer Lounge, phase IV paint scheme
Two Superliner I Coach Baggage cars, phase IV paint scheme
Superliner I Coach, phase IVb paint scheme
ExpressTrak boxcar
After the train was gone we went over to KFC/Taco Bell where I got a few shots of some equipment for sale on private tracks, such as old Amtrak Material Handling Cars, SOO cabooses and a couple old MoPac cabooses, as well as a passenger car and baggage car.
Here you can see a picture of Amtrak #184 in Fairfield
