Wood vs. Coal for Fueling Steam Engines

Fuel oil is in the range of 18,300 BTU per lb. Coal, bituminous, 10,200-14,600 BTU per lb. Oil loads into a container such as tender without entrained voids, whereas coal can have a lot of voids (it depends on how finely it's crushed). Efficiency of conversion into useful heat in the firebox isn't going to be a lot different, but I'm no expert on steam locomotive firebox combustion characteristics. <br /> <br />OS
