Train Whistles . . . again?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 2:47 PM
A couple of letters to the editor of the Berkeley Daily Planet today defended train whistles:

I wonder if the people who complain about train whistles are the same idiots who teach their car horns to honk when they approach or walk away. Sometimes they make me jump six feet when they disturb the steam locomotive recording I'm listening to on my walkman. Doesn't the law prohibit sounding of an auto horn when it serves no traffic purpose?

Trains? What are those? Didn't they die off in the 60's?

I think some people just use their car alarms to show off, anyhow...

Curiously, a Canadian city is now considering repealing their whistle ban following the death of a teenage girl who crossed behind one train only to be hit by one on the second track.

It's always interesting to see an idea that some people view as unwise pushed through, only to have the same people who pushed it through turn around and use the same arguments the original opponents used to have the action reversed...

Train whistles don't bother me...

Why?

I didn't buy a house near the tracks.

Do the city fathers think those whistles are there for the enjoyment of the engineer?

If so, then maybe they should silence the firetrucks and rescue trucks? If the engineer can't have fun, why should they!

I have a little sticker I picked up at the NYS Chief's show that says something to the effect of "Did my lights and siren wake you up? Well, that's too bad, Homer. If we gotta be up, then you've gotta be up."

The sound of a train horn never bothered me. Although I live a mile or so from the tracks I can still hear them very clearly. The sound of a train horn is good, it means the railroads are still running and are serving the needs of America hauling items that people who complain about the loud horns need to buy.

In Del Mar, CA, they are so at one with their environment, the police car sirens play
classical music...

Allan - it is also because of the demise of courtesy and self-restraint.

I know they are loud - but would rather have a loud warning that something that big is in the area than have them sneak up on you like an alligator. Both do great damage!

(And I loved Upchuck's response!)

SO what are the laws or rules of when trains can blow their horns and when they can not. Honk Their horns at all crossings. I would think they would be able to honk their horns for safety reasons because people dont always look to see if a train is coming.
Because Their are alot of crossings around the US that dont have gates or lights.
