My wife and I visited Australia and new Zealand in October, 1994. One of our stops was in melbourne where i photographed some V Line double ended
F 7's. are any of those F 7's still in service?

We also went to Alice springs which at that time was served by the Ghan twice a week. I photographed and videotaped the southbound Ghan leaving Alice Springs for Adelaide, and it was hauled by a pair of locomotives that looked like a crosss between an F 7 (they had the F7 nose) and an FP 45 or an F 45. The Indian Pacific was hauled by similar locomotives, and I photographed it eastbound at Katoomba and westbound outside of Sydney; are those locomotives still in service today?

Most of those locos are still here. The Oz F7s are called GMs, the double enders are either B or A (As have been remotored), and the FP45 hybrids, which have E8 noses, were CLs, but were rebuilt into CLPs and CLFs. Incidentally, all of the locos listed above have co-co bogies, to help cope with our light rail.

There are (?were) a couple of eight-wheeled F7s at Mt Newman mines, in the extreme west of the country.

Allan01 is correct, the only true F7A's (North American version) were used briefly on Mt. Newman Mining. As I've mentioned elsewhere, Australia is crawling with bulldog noses on several different versions. My personal favorites are AT26C's of the CL/CLF/CLP class of Australian Railroad Group, in Genesee & Wyoming orange and black, no less. They look like an FP45 with a bulldog nose.
