GE has a new locomotive!
Posted by Glen Ellyn on Thursday, June 9, 2005 5:38 PM
When I was reading a TIME magazine, I saw this picture in it. The magazine calls it the "90jet." I highly doubt that that is the real modle name of the engine. Anyway, I wonder who will buy it first.

GE’s Hybrid Locomotive:
GE engineers are designing a Hybrid diesel-electric locomotive that will capture the energy dissipated during braking and store it in a series of sophisticated batteries. That stored energy can be used by the crew on demand reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15 percent when compared to our own industry leading GE Evolution series locomotive.

I seem to recall hearing that the FL9 was designed for the unit to run as a diesel-electric (i.e. "normal" operation) outside of the city of New York and it's third rail territory, then switch off the prime mover and run on third rail current into the Park Ave. tunnel system and into Grand Central Terminal thus honoring the NYC law about poluution in the tunnels. Well, after a while the mechanics of these units that enabled them to switch back and forth between operational modes broke down and could not be effectively maintained and the railroad ended up running them in diesel mode even while idleing along the platforms of GCT...I can attest to this as I learned to recognize the smell of diesel exhaust form a locomotive when I would commute into GCT in the 1970's....the moral of this story is GOOD LUCK TO G.E., ITS BEEN TRIED BEFORE AND FAILED.

Well...the unit in the picture is the 2005, a regular DIESEL GEVO demonstrator which has been around since 2003, not the hybrid...the "Jet90" thing is refering to the jet airplane turbine engine to the right, not the locomotive.

Well then, what's the model name

eolafan, the GE hybrid design and the FL9 are two different animals.

Does anyone else find the first post hilarious?

This is just silly. You can clearly see the tip of the jet sticking out from the corner and below it is the text that mentions THE JET ENGINE CALLED THE 90JET. I mean really, what part of "Evolution locomtoive from GE" do you not understand? [:p]

Who will buy it first? Only you, my friend. [;)]

Your missin half of that pic that shows what the jet 90 is.

And Eloa, you are talkin bout two compleatly different things. The FL9 was desighed to swtich to a straight electric loco, just like a GG1 or E60 is all the time. This new deal will charge either batteries or supercaps and run the traction motors using the same idea of the toyota/honda/ford hybrid cars/suvs.

Actually I believe you missed my point, or I did not communicate it effectively...my point being that some folks seem always to be trying to invent something that is bigger, better and surely different and so very many of these ideas really don't work (like the FL9 story I tried to use as an example). If we stick to the good old tried and true we might be better off (MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY). History is full of stories of so called technological advances...like splitting the atom that history has proven may felt later we would have been better without. WOW, I PREDICT A FIRESTORM AGAIN OVER THIS ONE!

Here we go...

"the only thing that is constant is change"

I would be really pissed off if someone didn't split the atom, as if anyone small detail didn't happen in the past, everything would be compleatly different. Remember "Back to the Future"?

It is not Jet90 or 90Jet, but it is a "GE-90" jet engine.
GE 's ad is probably showing off it's transportation divisions accomplishments.
Afterall the GE-90 is the most powerful series of jet engines in the world, and ever invented.

They have a GE-90 now that put out 125,000lbs of thrust, it powers the
Boeing 777 series of aircraft.
