WHY IS THER NO MARKET IN THE U.S. AND CANADA FOR USED GE LOCOMOTIVES. THEY ALL SEEM TO GO TO SCRAP OR SOUTH OF THE BORDER?

Because EMDs are more reliable and last longer.When a class 1 road sells off its EMDs they are still useful on a shortline or regional ,or as lease units.When a GE is sold it is usually pretty close to junk.

Is parts availability also an issue? EMD has long been known for its willingness to provide replacement parts for almost any of its products. The only situation of which I'm aware that doesn't fit this scenario is when EMD announced that it would stop supplying parts unique to its V-6 567 engines, which led to a mass selloff of SW1's by almost anybody who had them.

You guy's are right, or were right. It's not like the 60's or 70's or 80's anymore. The new G.E. ac's are good, as for EMD they aint what they used to be, I can think of too many times talking to MR. Goodwrench trying to get the mac 90's to do something while the 4400 is keeping the railroad running, another thing to think about concerning 1 man crews.

Welcome to the forums. First, lowercase typing please. It's easier to read. With that out of the way, the older GE's when sold as junk, are usually junk with no sense to rebuild when better used locos are out there.

There's a handfull of railroads that acquired used GE's. Lake Superior & Ishpemming, BC Rail, TTI System, and Guilford to name a few. The Monongahela RR bought some GE's that were Super 7 rebuilds of older U series engines.
