Ditch Light Qs???

What voltage to ditch lights run on, and what controls the flashing? I have a project in mind.

Anyways, I too have had this question, I wonder if anyone on the forums is a mechanic or mantince worker...

Depending on whose version it is, either 32 or 74 volts. I know the WC had flasher boards for their engines made in WI, don't know the company offhand, though

The scary thing is is that i heard of people trying this trick on train crews... that is about the lowest thing you can do to someone...

Anyways, I wanted to make a front of a locomotive for a friend (he works at a museum), but after adding up the costs, it was a bit to much to donate... So, they will have to settle for $50 in the mail, lol.

the lighting totaled $200, and it wasn't even taken off a real loco!

With your diesel F250, they should be little more than speed bumps, especially if you have a grill protector/push bar on the front.

Best thing to do with those ricers find the shop that they get there NOS from and replace those tanks with CO2

putting a light board up would not do anything to me if i am running on clear signals i just hit ya. if i am running on bad signals i usually know who is in front of me.

My experience has been that the railroads that use, or used, flashing ditch lights (Conrail, Metra, probably others) have them tied in with the locomotive bell--when the bell is ringing, the lights are flashing. On Conrail, sounding the horn activated the bell as well, hence the ditch lights would begin to flash (interesting effect when viewed from a distance--you knew that the horn was blowing before the sound got to you!).

I can't address the voltage question, or the exact nature of the tie-in between the bell and the lights.

Adrian....If you care to share a sound equal to or above the "ricer" pipe....why not simply install a 30" or so Buell air horn so you can share it with them as they pass you....Believe they would hear it. Might point it a bit in that direction.
