Hi ,
I currenty work at large dealership in Houston TX as an mechanic. Watching
my paycheck geting smaller and smaller each week, I'v been thinking about
jumping ship. I'v always wanted to be a train engineer (train driver,) since I was a kid. What is required to get to an engineer and or conductor? I'v also
though about maybe get into a engine repair shop as a helper / apprentice.
I'm Ford sertified in gass engine repair, know a little about diesels.
Can anyone give help me on where to look for these jobs?

Check the websites of the major railroads and with the local Job Service. The route to engineer is to strat out as a brakeman first. Lots of work outdoors in all kinds of weather at all hours. You must be available 24/7/365. You may have to move and you may get furloughed.
For roundhouse positions you may have to start as a laborer or perhaps a machinist apprentice. Don't worry, no lathe or mill work involved. It is a wrench twisting job. This laborer job may involve hostling engines at times as well as fueling and sanding
The Railroad Retirement Board also posts railroad job openings at their site www.rrb.gov .

If you are serious about a train service career, I would highly recommed one of the following career training programs:
http://www.ModocRailroadAcademy.com/
http://Web.JCCC.edu/academic/nars/
http://www.Marshall.edu/railroad/
