The Crash
Posted by a737flyer on Sunday, April 10, 2005 1:16 AM
I was in Italy for two weeks and just got back. Two things. Tremendous rail service. Rome to Venice in just under five comfortable hours. Secondly, was there ever an announcement made about the track grinder running into the BNSF train?

Thanks

Roma to Venizia, 246 miles, 5 hours? you were obviously not on the "rocket". Yes, I remember enjoying travelling on trains here , but now a thing of the past.

That is what 50MPH? I wonder how many MPH A/trak does outside of the NEC. What do Canadian trains average? [:o)][:p]

A group from school made a trip from Rome to Paris on a night train, and I was the one they told about it...anyway, she said it was quite uncomfortable, and it was about a 13 hour ride and there were like 6 in a compartment

What class did they travel because in Europe the lower the class the better the room is that you get? 1st class is the best & most costly. I am unaware of the mileage Rome/Paris so it is difficult to assess the travel time. From what you posted I would suspect they purchased 3rd or 4th class tix. [;)][;)]

This is a little tardy, but the press of life, etc...!

The train from Rome to Venice is comfort-wise similar to the Acela. Service is at leat as good in first class and the seats are quite comfortable. Most had center table with facing seats. Meals were available butnot complimentary and the menu was as one would expect at a good Rome sandwich shop. The schedule calls for 4:33 for all trains but it does stop frequently as I clocked the speed several times at over 80 MPH.

Just as a sidenote...I have a Delorme map program with a GPS receiver and had it on board Acela Boston-NYC last week. It follows the tracks on the map but keeps trying to tell me to make turns to get back on the road!! I just turned the voice prompts off but it was fascinating watching the progress of that very fast train.

I've ridden Amtrak. The NY to Florida trains hit close to 80 mph in some stretches of the Carolinas and 70 mph in Florida.
