What do Canadian trains average? I am unaware of the mileage Rome/Paris so it is difficult to assess the travel time. From what you posted I would suspect they purchased 3rd or 4th class tix. The train from Rome to Venice is comfort-wise similar to the Acela. Service is at leat as good in first class and the seats are quite comfortable. Most had center table with facing seats. Meals were available butnot complimentary and the menu was as one would expect at a good Rome sandwich shop. The schedule calls for 4:33 for all trains but it does stop frequently as I clocked the speed several times at over 80 MPH. Just as a sidenote...I have a Delorme map program with a GPS receiver and had it on board Acela Boston-NYC last week. It follows the tracks on the map but keeps trying to tell me to make turns to get back on the road!! I just turned the voice prompts off but it was fascinating watching the progress of that very fast train.
