Those shots were taken at West Chicago, Illinois (where Andrew, in a previous post, reported seeing them in person), at or near the Wood Street grade crossing, not too far east of the EJ&E diamond. If I ever requisition a Time Travel Machine, I'm spending a LOT of time on the CNW, and the CB&Q. Why can't we have railroads like them anymore? It's good they're keeping those together, whether it's for technical reasons or just for sentimentality. ANybody here used to work for CNW? If so, you probably don't have very high opinoins for UP. In any case, is there a way to find out where these units are now? Reply Edit UPTRAIN Member sinceJune 2002 From: Independence, MO 1,570 posts Posted by UPTRAIN on Monday, April 11, 2005 8:22 PM I know they aren't that good...I just wanted to prove that they were here and I saw them. The number and the lack of UP yellow patch over it is the only thing that counts....that's the reason there is more than one railfan...so another one may be more fortunate to catch it at a better time of day...I could have trespassed and gotten photos of it up close in the daylight...but it stayed north of the crew change point until it was almost dark...I have a reputation for being a fan that plays by the rules here and I'm not about to risk it for some photos that are "above lousy" status. We're all just a bunch of railfans sharing info. Calm down, relax, and enjoy the hobby we all share! [;)][8D] By the way, I agree that former CNW crews probably don't like the UP too much. I remember talking to an engineer at Clinton, IA once shortly after the takeover. There was not much love to be had for the Yellow Borg there. It was May 2 years ago & his litany was pretty angry to say the least. Joey, I worked for 20 years on the CNW (Wisconsin division), but left before the UP takeover. However, when I get together with my old railroad friends and discuss the railroad, the most used phrases I hear are, "And we used to think the CNW was fupped duck! The UP is 3 times as bad!!" And so on... Having said that, though, I think railroading was more fun under CNW. A lot of the officers we see are totally clueless about what's really involved with doing a job out here, and many do little more than crunch numbers to justify their existence. We get saddled with more new rules every time there's an incident, and they wonder where the production has gone. It wasn't too long ago that I used to think I'd work beyond my retirement age if I were physically and mentally capable of it. Now I'm not so sure.
