Anyone have info on the Arizonaand California Rail Road??

I was wondering if anyone had info on the ACRR. I live in Arizona and thought that it would be pretty cool to follow up on a small line railroad. Some one besides the Big Usuals. Where they run, how often, and good places ot go to watch. If its practical, the kid and I are planning a train watching road trip soon.

Thanks for any info.

Best Regards,

Well, my friend, you are at the east end of that RR. It is the old ATSF line from Mathie to Parker and on west to the Main Line at Cadiz, CA, between Needles and Barstow. See URL http://www.railamerica.com/railmaps/ARZC.htm and also www.railamerica.com

I have fanned the west end. I have some great sunset shots of the interchange with SF at Cadiz. On that end the A&C arrives from the east and interchanges cars with the BNSF, then returns (to Parker I think). I havn't been out there for a few years, but back then this interchange happened around 4-5 PM. The A&C would use 3 engines (GP38-2s then) and there trains would be in the neighborhood of 45 cars long. So your best bet would be to chase the train rather than waiting for it. I've only chased the A&C from Cadiz to about 25 miles east of there. But those raods were in good shape (for dirt). I don't know about the east end, but the west end is in sparsely populated area. Take basic survival supplies, lots of water and let someone know wher you are going to be safe.

John,

There have been a couple of articles on the Arizona & California Railroad. The first was in the January 1992 issue of "CTC Board", the second was in the September 2002 issue of "Railfan & Railroad". There even has been a modeling article "Modeling Arizona & California's GP38's" in the June 1998 issue of "Railroad Model Craftsman"
