In fact webservers can identify what browser you were using, what OS and from that you can attempt tell if someone is running Windows9x, Windows2k, Macintosh OS's, Unix, etc.

However, the IP Address alone only tells us -- well not very much. See it doesn't indicate if you're using a PC or a Mac, how big your hard drive is, if you have a 1Ghz or a 286, if you're a single computer or on a network of 5,000 computers connecting via a firewall. It doesn't indicate where you live.

Yes, we could look up an IP Address and figure out who the ISP is, but exact location is another thing. For instance, many IP Addresses used by AOL generally indicate Virginia. The reason is that AOL's host complex is located in Northern Virginia. So a user from Florida might connect through AOL and the IP Address would indicate Virginia.

Many of the IP Addresses used by ISPs get recycled and resused. The IP Address you had this morning might not be the same one you have this afternoon. On the other hand, if you're connecting from work or a university, then the IP would most likely be the same, but the entire location is most likely going be accessing the Internet via a single IP Address.

With that said, an IP Address can be tracked down to an ISP or location (business, university, etc.). That ISP would have logs which could match up the user account in use at the time with that specific IP Address. From there, the ISP could look up the account information for that user account and identify who it was, etc. But ISPs are not known for sharing that type of information willingly.

Sorry, I couldn't help it but I felt compelled to jump in. Don't want to scare people off the Internet. [;)]
