Now all he needs is a spell checker that writes the essay and that knows the correct spelling of "discussion".

Hybrid locomotives, hmmmmm....

Let's cross a diesel engine with a steam engine...and see what kind of offspring they produce.

I think they've kinda,sorta,done that
Think 'Steam-Turbine-Electrics'.

But that's got nothing to do with diesel. Maybe we could burn diesel fuel in the firebox of the steam-turbine-electric, but that would be plain silly. Then again so's the rest of this thread. Now if we could figure a way to work a nuclear reactor into this contraption and incorporate some hobo wheels with pumped storage, we could hook it up to the power grid and use it to supply electricity and pull trains hauling spools of new power lines to set up along the right of way. The train could also haul a load of snowmobiles to be distributed to waiting hobos along the way at regular intervals. Then all our problems would be solved, except for farmers in Montana.

Cars are finally catching up to railroad used technology. Diesel locomotives have far too much power to use a transmission reliably. They were forced to use electricity to transmit power to traction motors the drive the wheels. So they hooked up the Diesel to a large generator and the compressor.

Regenerative braking barily works with cars let alone on a much larger scale. They might be able to do this with hydraulics and accumulators, but I doubt they would spend that much space on something like that.

Union Pacific has a few. Called "Green Goats". Bank of batteries powers the traction motors and the diesel cuts in as necessary to charge the batteries. They appear to be working well as yard engines. Battery technology is not there yet to use in heavy road service.

Some claim it's a dialect of English, but actually it's an ancient tongue spoken by the Gibberites. It's called Gibberish. Dunkirkeriestation/trainfinder22/cinderdick et al. is apparently fluent in Gibberish.

Ah the Gibbers. They were a quaint people lacking a sense of proportion, and almost totally devoid of logic whatsoever. Yet they managed to develop a language uniquely qualified to elloquently express their copious acuumulation of nonsense which they passed down from generation to generation.
