Where am I (railfan hotspot)
Posted by chad thomas on Sunday, March 13, 2005 3:39 PM
I am in a town served by 3 railroads (4 counting Amtrak).

There are five main lines out of town.

I am Fairly close to an international border, but closer to two state lines.

One of my lines out of town leads to a place that was in the news recently.

I am next to a body of water.

FYI no Amtrak @ Rochelle. Also Omaha is some distance from a international border. [:D]

The "nearer to two state borders" and "near body of water" pretty much wipes out the south coast.

The "near body of water" pretty much limits it to the Great Lakes or either ocean.

The Pacific ocean is out because of the two state rule.

Can't think of a single place in Maine that has 3 RRs plus Amtrak, so that's out.

Working east to west:

Albany - 3 RRs & Amtrak - no body of water

North of Albany/NE - no town with 5 main lines.

Buffalo - has 4 RRs (NS, CSX, CP, CN) also flunks 2 state rule

Cleveland - 3 RRs if you count the WLE & Amtrak - flunks 2 state rule - not really near Int'l boarder

Toledo - possible, but a real stretch to say it's near an international boarder

Detroit - flunks 2 state rule

Chicago - too many RRs, flunk Int'l boarder rule

Milwaukee - already out

Minneapolis/St Paul - flunks 2 state rule

Every where west of there flunks 2 state rule

Everywhere north of Detroit/Milwaukee/Minneapolis flunks 5 main lines rule

I need more clues or clarification on the rules I'm interpreting wrong.

Don't let the body of water one fool you. It's a small body of water, but extreemly scenic.

Another hint

I'm way west of the Mississippi.

Sandpoint, Idaho has Amtrak, BNSF, UP, & Montana Rail Link. Is in the panhandle between Washington and Montana and Canada. It's on Lake Pend Oreille. A map shows BNSF/UP from the South, BNSF continuing North, UP forking NorthEast, and MRL to the East maybe a better map would show a 5th main.

You forgot the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad (POVA), which runs into
Sandpoint's little Boyer Yard using just a few miles of trackage rights over UP, which in turn is using ex-BNSF (GN) trackage through that side of town.

I wasn't shure about POVA's operations. About all I know about them is they run in the area. I wasn't even sure if they went into Sandpoint, so I didn't mention them. Its been 7-8 years sience I was there last.

garyaiki, [:D]
Yes, you win an all expense paid first class trip to Sandpoint. You will be picked up at your house by a limo and delivered to your nearest Amtrak station. You will be accomodated in a beautifully furnished private vista dome car. In Spokane you will be furnished with a brand new custom RV. For your exploring pleasure we will throw in a Jeep to use on day trips. For two weeks we will provide a local railfan guide to show you around. At the end of two weeks we will once again provide first class private car transportation back to your local Amtrak station. And you will have limo service to your home.
Oh no [:O]. Did I say that out loud ???[:I]
Sorry, I meant to say no tickets [:(]
