How about that Item 4 that the UTU is proposing!!! Shift and weekend differentials, meaning extra pay for work between 6pm to 6am and weekend pay from 1201AM Friday to 1159pm Sunday. It would be nice, BUT IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. I see that request by the National Carrier's Conference to consolidate train and engine crews as the first step to a common extraboard. No more freight pools or regular assigned jobs. Everyone will simply work off one giant extraboard. And I'm also very suspicious of the Carrier's "Manpower Utilization and Productivity Improvement." The changes they propose are: 1. If an employee does not meet the railroad's attendance standard for full time employment, a proportional reduction shall be made in the railroad's contributions towardt that employee's benefits based on his/her availability. An employee who is available less than fifty (50) percent of the time will not be eligible for benefits. 2. Any existing rules relating to attendance or absences from service such as leaves of absence, guarantee, lay off, vacation scheduling, temporary vacancies, exercise of seniority, displacement, assignment, extra board regulation, and pool regulation, will be amended or eliminated so as to facilitate full-time employment. NO WAY!!! Not only do the carriers want to yank benefits and pay away, but now they want to try to prorate it based on availability??? So, if I'm available 80% of the time the carrier wants 20% of my pay???
