Trains and nice spots around NYC

In the first two weeks in October I'll visit New York City. Is there someone, who can give me some hints about everything belonging with trains in or around NYC. Please note that I'll have NO car, so everything must be reachable with public transport in a one day round trip.

On a recent trip to that area I ventured all the way North to end of track on the Metro North (ex NYC) Harlem Division. This line goes about 75 or so miles to its terminus. It used to go all the way to connect with the line from Albany to Boston, but was cut back many years ago. You can get on a (third rail electric m.u.) Metro North Harlem Division train at Grand Central Terminal, but make sure you check the schedule and get on one that connects in Brewster with a diesel hauled shuttle which will take you further north to end of track at Winnecic (sp?)...these diesel hauled trains still get the old FL-9 units, usually in pairs with two or three coaches but can sometimes get the new G.E. Genesis cousins deisgned to run in diesel OR off of third rail south of Brester North station. The area north of Brester is bi-directional single track and is very, very rural..kind of reminds me of fifties railroading...or something like "The Tooterville Choo Choo" would be. Keep an eye out for the Wingdale Sanitarium (at the town of Wingdale station), used to be for State of New York mental cases but now pretty much closed, very scary place!) Neat rail adventure. In town of you will find some small eating establishments for a lunch before you keep going north a few more stations to end of track and then catch a southbound back to the city. Those who live at last station north have to catch a 6:00 a.m. train in order to get into city at 8:30 a.m. and in office by 9:00, then must catch a 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. train in order to eat dinner at home by 8:30 or 9:00 p.m., watch the news and catch some sleep before getting up and doing it all over again! Some life, must give them credit, but not for me! Have a good and fun trip to NYC. Jim

Mineola on the LIRR which has trains from new york penn has hundreds of trains a day. Also take the EJ or Z subway lines to Sutphin Blvd and visiti the busiest passenger station in the country the jamaica lirr station
