To compare the demise of steam with the demise of the Milwaukee's PCE is comparing outdated technology with an incident of government short-sightedness. The former is gone because something superior came along. The latter is gone because federal regulators were lax in their public directive. The market perversions occuring in the Northern Tier today are an indication that a mistake was made when rail competition was eliminated. There is no such market case for bringing back steam.
