The Milwaukee's Puget Sound Extension was built from scratch. They purposfully avoided all the population centers because those towns and cities were already served by the NP, GN or both. The MILW decided to compete on transit time to the coast, and they built the shortest, fastest, and only continuous route from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest in the process. After that they built the branch lines. <br /> <br />
