<p>BN had experimented with ARES, a stand-alone system. The merger with ATSF ended the project.</p> <p>There would have been a starting point for a stand-alone system. It is said it would have been too expensive and time consuming to finally develop it.</p> <p>Wagging tongues suggest that tasking the signal departments with PTC development and implementation was the end of the stand-alone system as it would make many signals surplus.</p> <p>Here is video about BNSF's PTC system: <a href="https://youtu.be/7fDRazEWAKU">https://youtu.be/7fDRazEWAKU</a><br />Regards, Volker</p>
