The Burlington Northern itself was the product of the 1970 merger of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR with the Northern Pacific RR with the Great Northern RR with the Spokane, Portland, & Seattle RR. These railroads were originally controlled by the great American railroad baron, James J. Hill. I believe a Supreme Court decision in the 1890's prevented Mr. Hill from combining his railroads into one operating unit.
