Just to elaborate: Buckeye Yard was still new when Stanley Crane decided to abandon CR's Pittsburgh-Columbus-Union City IN line in 1984 (it carried over 30 trains daily up till then). To avoid the likely embarrassment that closing Buckeye Yard would have caused, CR started diverting freights off its St Louis-Cleveland line to Buckeye for classifying. To reach Buckeye, trains used the Columbus-Toledo and Columbus-Gallion lines. This practice continued into the CR split up. With the NS takeover of Buckeye Yard and CR's Columbus-Cincinnati line, Buckeye is again located at an important junction, so it's future should be assured, unless NS decides it can do all its Ohio classification work at Bellevue. Not only is Buckeye Yard very active, NS's old yard on Columbus' south side (on the Bellevue-Portsmouth OH line) also is still active, including the intermodal facility.
