Train derailment in Herkimer County 9/4/2004 8:38 PM By: Capital News 9 web staff State Police are investigating a train derailment that happened in Herkimer County. Police said about 30 cars went off the tracks along the Erie Canal in the Town of Schuyler. All of the cars are empty but, at one time they were carrying Sodium Hydroxide so there is residue of the substance in the cars. Hazmat crews were called in as a precaution. Scott Lane Fire Chief, Town of Schuyler, said,"We did not evacuate any more of an area, than the canal and the railroad. Actually there is few homes within this area, so it's in a rare..an area where people are not living." The train had a total of 120 cars. No one was injured and police are still trying to determine what caused the derailment
