"A train carrying grenades and bombs has derailed in Nevada"

  • "A public safety alert from the Elko City and County Public Safety Department posted on Twitter said that the train derailed around 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday.
  • The train was carrying bombs, ammonium nitrate, and grenades."

The report is extremely sketchy.

What, no propane, anhydrous ammonia, radioactive material, crude oil, or gasoline?  How do they expect to make a decent-sized crater in the event of a derailment or terrorist attack?

Based on the Newswire piece on this it’s a non-event.  Munitions cars were on opposite end of the train.

An updated report.

"There are no reported injuries from a train carrying military munitions that derailed Wednesday morning on the northeastern side of Nevada, according to the Elko County Sheriff's Office.

None of the 22 railcars that came off the tracks Wednesday were carrying the munitions or any other hazardous material, according to Lt. Kevin McKinney of the Elko County Sheriff's Office."

"Update, 12:20 p.m.

The Union Pacific Railroad has reported to the Elko County Sheriff's Office that a total of 22 cars were involved in the train derailment near Wells, Nevada on Wednesday morning.

It also said a shipment of vegetable oil was spilled from one of the derailed cars, according to an update posted to the sheriff's office Facebook page. "

The owner of the line is Union Pacific.  DOD will NEVER say what cargo one of their cars is carrying.  ALL DOD shipments are specifically exempt from reporting their contents to anyone.

The US News online report called the freight cars "wagons", like in Europe.  The photo taken from a distance shows an accordian pileup of mostly empty centerbeam flatcars.

Did it blow up?  No?  Then what's the big deal?

We had a saying in the Marines, " 'Almost' and 'close' only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades!"  Appropriate in this case, dont'cha think?

Any of you gents ever throw a grenade?  I did, and once was enough!  Those things ain't cherry bombs, they're powerful as hell and just as scary!

Want to see some grenade action?  Here's a video...

Note, those blue painted grenades are practice dummies, the real things show up later.  The vid really doesn't do the explosion justice, it's a LOT louder, trust me, but look how the camera shakes!

Your statement is absolutely false in the case of a common carrier like UP. Might be true in the case of a highway shipment in DOD vehicle with armed guards.

One reason there was a certain level of chaos surrounding the runaway cars at Watertown, NY a few years ago was because the containers were placarded.  Turned out it was flares, but placards were in place.

I did, once, in basic training.  We were supposed to throw them over a "levee", but mine came up a little short and landed on the near side.   The lieutenant shouted and pushed me down, and a bunch of gravel rained down on us.  Lucky for the army I wasn't in the infantry.

A few years back, some gondolas that were placarded radioactive appeared to be leaking.  Someone from the general public noticed it and raised the alarm.  It caused some concern until it was determined it was just rain water coming off the side of the car, a car of low-level waste material.  It was raining at the time it was initially observed.

The same day the of the Nevada derailment, they had one west of Belle Plaine IA.  One of those large, 200 plus car, trains.  The media was saying sugar and soda (ash) was spilled.  I hadn't heard about it until late afternoon, although I thought something was up when my mark fell back about 24 hours on the line up.

The guy who told me about it said they derailed in two places in the train about 100 cars apart.  A twofer.  The media didn't say anything about being derailed in two places that I've seen.  Probably didn't know about it since one of the locations was near a crossing.

Did the crew get bonus points? Can't be easy to derail in two places, especially that far apart in the train.

Munitions are NOT armed when transported.  The fuses are transported seperatly (different car(s)).  Now if there was a fire, then get VERY conerned REAL FAST.

Sketchy is being charitable.  Incompetent is more like it.  Not knowing owner/operator of the line and thus the train is a reporter that has lived in a fog in his own mind.

I thought they use those news items as a cover to clear the area so ET can come and visit.Devil

Did you read?

"Union Pacific Railroad, which was overseeing the train involved, said 22 cars derailed near Wells, Nevada, about 10:20 a.m. local time Wednesday. 'No hazardous materials were involved and no one was injured,' UP spokesman Tim McMahan told the Elko Daily."

I read the initital article - the details wre nowhere near as specific as what you have printed.  Other than munitions and HAZMAT that were supposed to be in the train the reporter had no idea of the company operating the train or the contents of any cars that were actually derailed.

I quoted from the OP's initial post.  Unless he altered it later,  that's what it clearly states.

Odd,  the article is dated the 19th, same as the original post.

Odd though it may be - the original verbiage in the post was clap trap not worthy of a 4th Grade Elementrary School news letter.

I suspect a Intern may have 'penned' the originally published clap trap, when they showed it to 'the boss' he broke a couple of rivets on his Levis and edited the original to what is now being seen.

I wish Henry Sommers, ol' "Ride With Me Henry," was still around on the Forum.

As I recall, since he'd been in the trade he had a LOT to say about unsupervised interns putting together news stories.  And if I recall correctly, he put most of the blame on those who were supposed to doing the supervising.

Henry's still around leading his tour groups, in fact he's mentioned in an article called "Ride With Us!"  in the June "Railpace" magazine.
