I went with Derek Carter's photo.  Rapid Transit photos are not that common and it is on the MBTA Blue Line.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I found the photo composition and the colors in Theresa Cramer's shot just beautiful. Having been to Deshler, Bob Jorden's shot also is excellent. Tough call. Nice work all.

I liked Bob Jordan's photograph.  It has it all, the lack of daylight, the snow and cold, that can make make those gloomy winter days so depressing at times.

Teresa Cramer’s photo is spectacular!  But, it was taken December 3 this year, before winter.  Does that qualify?

Bob Jordan’s photo currently has the overwhelming favorite in tallying.   But, I don’t get it.  My eye focuses on the big dark object below center.

It is surprising Barry Gaston’s photo currently has a poor tally.  Now, that photo is winter!  Blue, I don’t know.

What I really like, though, is Alex Mayes’ Conrail and signal bridge shot.  Now, THAT is great photo composition with a sense of blue and winter.  I would choose that one!

It makes no difference when the photo was taken. And judging by the thickness of the coats some folks in the photo are wearing, I'd say it looks rather wintry to me.

Since yesterday was the first day of winter, do any of them qualify? Clown

Really, you asked?  Really!

May I suggest you focus on the compliment … Yours really was a super cool photo, stunning matter of fact!

Best,

K.P.

While Alex's Conrail shot did a nice play on the theme, my first take on seeing the theme was the "woes" definition of blues, which Gary Paston's image has in spades.   It got my vote.

K.P. ~ I thought you were trying to point out that I broke some special rule. Not sure why you then pointed out that I wasnt focusing on the positive, that you think my shot is "spectacular". Thank you for that "compliment" but initially that indeed was not my focus. I thought I broke a rule with my submission and wondered why the magazine would include my photo in the contest if that were the case. Besides, as "spectacular" as you thought my shot was, you didnt vote for it anyway :-) My apologies for the confusion.

All are first-rate, all are masterpieces, and all involved thake photos like I wish I could take, but I've got to go with Oren Helbock's.

What can I say?  I'm a sucker for steam.

According to wikipedia there are two types of seasons:

Here in Chicago, our WGN weatherman Tom Skilling and the other stations talk of metrological weather seasons as starting on the first of the month (March 1 = spring, June 1 = summer, September 1 = fall, and December 1 = winter) so by that measure, Theresa's photo qualifies. Astrological is when the sun is at its soltice (northen or southern extreme) or its equinox (crosses the equator).

I voted for it as I thought it was not only meeting the subject requirements but also beautiful. It also was unique. The others also were good and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Conrail scene has been replicated but Theresa's shot was a new (at least to me). So Theresa, thanks and keep taking photos.

If there's snow on the ground, it's winter - and we get significant accumulations as early as late October...

I hope Raggedy Anne and Andy get a good stiff shot of Wild Turkey bourbon to ward off the cold.

On the other hand, considering those grins maybe they already got it!

Merry Christmas Tree68!
