<p><span style="font-size:small;">In a previous post to this thread, I showed the impact of coal traffic on CSX's volumes and revenues. Here are the numbers for all of the freight carriers for 2012, as per data from the American Association of Railroads.</span></p> <p></p> <div><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-size:x-small;">Coal accounted for 41 per cent of the volumes (721.6 million tons) and 21.6 per cent of gross revenues ($14.7 billion). </span></span></div> <div></div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">Chemicals and allied products made up 9.9 per cent of the volumes (173.3 million tons) and 13.5 per cent of gross revenues ($9.2 billion). </span></div> <div></div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">Miscellaneous mixed shipments, which AAR says is essentially intermodal traffic, accounted for 6.4 per cent of volumes (111.8 million tons) and 12.9 per cent of gross revenues ($8.8 billion).</span></div> <div></div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">Farm products accounted for 7.9 per cent of volumes (139.4 million tons) and 7.8 per cent of gross revenues ($5.3 billion).</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">Non-metallic minerals made up 7.4 per cent of volumes (130.1 million tons) but only 3.9 per cent of gross revenues ($2.6 billion).</span></div> <div></div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">Food and kindred products made up 5.8 per cent of volumes (101.4 million tons) and 8 per cent of gross revenues ($5.4 billion)</span></div> <div></div> <div><span style="font-size:small;">The other 21.6 per of volumes and 38.8 per cent of gross revenues were generated by metallic ores, metals and products, petroleum and coke, stone, clay and glass products, waste and scrap materials, pulp, paper and allied products, lumber and wood products, motor vehicles and equipment, and other commodities. </span></div> <div></div> <div>If coal shipments dried up quickly, it appears that the nation's railroads would be challenged to find the revenues to make up for those lost because of a decline in coal shipments.<br /><br /></div>
