Workin on the Railroad

Hello everyone,
I have been reading some of the posts here and some are quite interesting.
Recently I have had the opportunity to apply for a job at UP as an Electronic Technician. After reading some posts here it seems like it takes very special people to work for the railroad. What kind of environment can I expect if I decide to take a position. As far as traveling, working conditions, hours, pay...etc
Right now I am a Cable TV Technician doing pretty much the same thing the ET job description lists. Any comments about working for the rail?
My wife seems to think it will be more stable. Let me here what you have to say.
Jim
