Do you like the Union Pacific Railroad?

Howmany here likes the Union Pacific Railroad? After reading some posts, it seems that some people don't[?] thanks[:)]

The negative is mostly from people who have had to deal with the company thru work or other related activities, so the perception is focused thru a definite viewpoint. But for guys like me, who are modelers or railfans, I think its more nuetral. I have no real issue with Uncle Pete except for a perceived arrogance that the company shows when relating to public affairs.

We had a runaway here not too long ago that crashed into a City of Commerce neighborhood. UP did NOTHING to notify local police or fire that there was a wreck heading there way. They were more concerned with trying to maintain internal control of the situation than an immediate realization that they had to include outside authorities to evacuate trackside areas. Even after the wreck UP was unresponsive to city personel. Its that stonewalling and inpenitrability that people dislike.

The better question is, "Do you Like the Central Pacific Railroad", as that's who they really are.

Yes, I see plenty wrong--donkeys kicking the donkeys below them, who in turn kick those below them, and occasionally I feel the pain. Sometimes I think they kick themselves (or shoot themselves in the foot, to mix metaphors).

But the trains, the new power, the track projects, the expansion--CNW was never like this (well, maybe it would have been)! Today I'm not working--but I'll spend a little time trackside, and see that last night's struggles weren't for naught.

I think it's the best of times and the worst of times--and UP can be both the best and the worst of railroads.

I neither like or dislike UP as an entity. They are, however a railroad, and I do like to watch trains. Mark me in the neutral column.

As long as they have the steam program running, .[angel] I'm just above neutral (slightly for them). Once they drop the fires for good, I'm sure my perception will drop into "the evil empire" range. [tdn] I believe, on the whole, that they have given the railroad industry as many black eyes[B)] for the reasons listed above and on the many threads on this same topic, as they have "atta-boys".

They have alot of cool locomotives and rollingstock for us railfans to look at so yes. If you mean do you like UP's management, I don't think anybody really likes any management (especially the folks that work for them) so no is the natural choice.

I don't turn my head when they go by, but can't say I particularly like them. But that's just purely from the view of a train fan... There's no real logic behind it. It just reminds me of every other giant, impersonal, corporation. In my mind, it's like being a fan of Walmart or something. I like railroads that are smaller, and have more character and personality.

I believe this has since been corrected and there now is a plan to contact local authorities in emergencies. I did not hear the same criticism about the recent derailment near Pico Rivera.
I appreciate all the upgrading of local branch lines that UP has done in LA and Orange counties. I have not bought any stock in the company but will consider it in the future.

Uncle Pete brings me 6 or 7 trains a day to switch, and hauls 6 or 7 outa here every day.

The Brand New Santa Fe brings us 4 or 5 a day also...

No. This company finds a way to shoot itself in the foot in terms of public relations. Their main issue this yr was inproper use of their silly logo. UP needs to be concerned about running its real rr efficiently for both employees & shippers and not worry about some Joe Railfan that paints a UP HO scale eng andsells it at a swap meet. As far as I'm concerned, UP is nothing but a fly-by-night operation. If in doubt on this, ask an employee or shipper who has done business w/UP.

What might have happened to SP if UP hadn't "taken" it? Once again we act as if railroads aquired by UP were powerless to stop it from taking them over. As a railfan I hate to see railroads disappear but as a railfan I still like UP.

UP is all I ever see around here--BNSF has trackage rights but they are all WAY across town...a BIG town. So I only get UP action pics.
When UP stops killing my neighbors with poisonous gas clouds caused by overworked crews falling asleep or missing signals, I might start to like them.
I miss the SP, MP, MKT, T&NO and T&P.

I'm kind of in the middle on this one. Yes they do have nice paint schemes and such, but they have taken some things away(CNW-SP-MKT-MP) and the patch job on some of these locomotives makes me sick!

Ironic that UP in the past had such an outstanding PR reputation. Changes in corporate structure, a new generation of aggressive management, and a hard focus on the "bottom line" have yielded high profits, happy customers, angry customers, stressed employess and a nasty PR reputation. Hopefully, as with the other corporate entities things will shift again.

A good example of this is Norfolk Southern's recent change in attitude towards having passenger trains on it's rails. (Of course, receiving money from government entities to upgrade NS tracks for the service has a lot to do with it!)

Guys, there has been a lot of talk about the leader of UP and his aggressive tactics. Who is he? What's his background? Age group?

I like union pacific because they are my favorite Railroad Canadian Pacific Railway closet american friend and do alot of interchange and stuff and Up has alot of nice looking engines and i am a CNW SP DRGW Fan to so therefore Up is one of my favorite railroads

The problem with the Union Pacific is that they are WAY TOO POWER HUNGRY!
The UP takes control of the SP and the whole system just crashes.
