Trying to track down rumor that CSX has bought a large track of land from the Callaway foundation . Property would be 1 - 3 miles SW of the SW CP of the Lineville sub ( ACL ) and the A&WP sub. The land area would be close to the LaGrange city limits. Also about 1 - 2 miles from the LaGrange airport.
Location is just south of the Birmingham - Manchester - Jacksonville main and the A&WP sub from Atlanta - LaGrange - Montgomery. All main line tracks are already in place except a wye from Birmingham to southbound A&WP line.. Many years ago there was a switching track wye from both lines ( tracks still there but not switches ) thru a long retired textile plant so upgrading might not be too expensive.
Another factor is KIA is expanding its production and at present all auto carriers have to take autos to a mixing center near Montgomery.
Any one with more info either yes or no ?
How much land is required for a minor and major intermodal terminal ?
Seems like it, kinda sorta - about a week ago - 166 acre site, as manufacturing company sites - intermodal terminal not mentioned. Also, a little more south of the location you had in mind, I think. See these links:
CSX news release: http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/media/press-releases/callaway-south-industrial-park-site-receives-csx-select-site-designation/
Map of site location: http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/customers/industrial-development/site-search/csx-select-sites/detail/?i=43A1D57F-B91F-2ADD-F0040341C3C1804E There seems to be a lot more details in the table under the map.
Local newspaper article: http://lagrangenews.com/news/home_top-news/4698530/Callaway-South-Industrial-Park-designated-as-CSX-Select-Site
Search for "CSX" + "Callaway" to see if there's more.
On the smaller end is Lehigh Valley Rail Management's Beth-Intermodal Terminal at about these Lat./ Long. coords.: N 40 36.188' W 75 19.747' it's roughly 3,000 ft. long x 600 ft. wide, or about 45 - 50 acres.
On the upper end is BNSF's Memphis Intermodal Facility, at 185 acres - see: http://www.bnsf.com/media/news-releases/2010/april/2010-04-21a.html

A reading of the articles cited above shows that CSX has purchased nothing. It has merely designated the property as a "Select Site".
"According to the Development Authority of LaGrange, select sites are properties that have been identified as capable locations for future manufacturing facilities along the CSX rail lines. There are only two select sites in Georgia; one is in Richmond Hill, near the coast, and now, the site in LaGrange."
I don't see that this has anything at all to do with an intermodal terminal or a rail yard of any kind. It only indicates potential shipping opportunities exist for CSX should manufacturers locate there.
