A special southern pacific paintscheme?

Hi. I´m a train fan from germany. A few days ago, i saw a slide with an General electric U36B, with southern pacific marks, but no normal paintscheme. The loco was red and yellow, the lettering white. Was this an early version of the Kodochrome paint? How many locos wears this scheme? And when? Thanks for your answer, Michael

That sounds like one of the experimental Daylight schemes they tried some years before the Kodachrome scheme. I have a slide or two of an SD 40 in similar paint. There weren't very many to begin with, and I think all were gone by 1990.

A number of years ago, SP contracted with Morrison Knudsen to rebuild four of its U25Bs with Swedish made prime movers. The locomotives came out of the rebuild with a new "body" look and were painted in an experimental Daylight scheme.

The paint scheme you refer to was for the SP/SF
merger that wasn't approved.The markings on the long hood were postioned to read SPSF once the merger was approved,before hand though the units only sported their owners name.The STB never approved the union.(the only one)
I'm not sure how many loco's still wear that paint scheme.Though in 1998 I did see one Southern
Pacific unit on a westbound manifest at El Paso Tx
I also seen a Santa Fe unit in 1996 in phoneix Az.
Both units were looking pretty haggered,and with
both UP's and BNSF's recent large locomotive purchase's they've probally been retired.
But that,s a guess,if there's any still out there
I would love to know as the photo's of that trip
were stolen.
