The record claim itself is beyond the point of being proven or disproved. So we are free to believe it or not. But issue is that Hanke claims to have debunked the ATSF record. That is an impossible burden, as you point out.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><span style="font-size: small;">To me, the most interesting aspect of this controversy is why there should be such a desperate need to debunk the claimed record. Would-be debunkers seem to be piling up large heaps of little uncertainties in the hope that a large enough pile will win their case. So we end up with claims that watches did not have second hands in the 1905 era, or an inch was not as long as today's inch. </span></span></p>
