Thank you very much for your amazingly deep and thoughtful analysis.  I cannot begin to verify or question your calculations, but the outcome certainly fits my expectation, even if it does not quite confirm the claimed speed of the record.  I certainly agree with your criticism of the assertions in the article that the speed record would have defied the laws of physics.  <o:p></o:p> My opinion is that the railfan steam interest is almost exclusively focused on the latest and greatest steam locomotive achievements of the super power era, and therefore they feel that any claims of record greatness have to belong to that modern era.  So they readily accept speed claims from the super power era and need to debunk claims from circa 1900.  That is exactly the way Hanke’s debunking comes off to me.  It is a bias against antiquity, and it often assumes that people from 100 years ago were not as smart or talented as they are today.
