To me, the best part of "anticipation" is the unseen headlight, be it at night, reflecting off the rails, or in the daytime, reflecting off cars on an adjacent track.. You know something will be here very soon. A horn in the distance may have contributed to that feeling, but that aspect of it is hard to catch in a picture. So, for my preference, I have two good shots to choose between: Brandon Townley's and Duane Rapp's. Brandon's was highly nostalgic for me: I used to stand out on the GTW tracks in anticipation of the arrival of the thrice-weekly local to Grand Haven. Its horn could be heard as it came through Spring Lake, but it would always have to stop before the drawbridge over the Grand River. And seeing the headlight start coming through that bridge meant that I'd soon see some of my friends again, and be welcomed either up in the cab or helping bleed the train off in preparation for a drop. But I wound up choosing Duane's: location, location, location! This is about six miles or less from where I am right now, and I've been on the platform and on the old CA&E bridge countless times. The light snowfall, to me, heightens the anticipation.

I actually went with Mr Tremblay's loco on the island of a multi lane highway.....looks more like a mongrel dog anticipating where he was going next and when....because it was the most different. Yeah, all the others showed anticipation but this one has me anticipating. It works.
RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.
Had to go with Brandon’s shot, it elicited the most immediate and visceral reaction.
Actually was wanting to see what showed up!

Brandon's shot...It seems to fit the theme best to me. I've seen headlights around the curve before, but never from behind a bridge. Well done!
I liked Michael Harding's photo with the snow drifts over the tracks. We know exactly what's going to happen when the train comes through, but we still anticipate the thrill of seeing the snow thrown up by the locomotive. Mathieu Trembly's photo of the CN locomotive was just plain weird to me. For some reason, it made me think of the circus- one of those crummy little circuses, with broken down equipment. Good photo, weird subject.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
I really liked many of this week's photos, but mostly from an artistic perspective.
The photo that, for me, most said 'anticipation' was Michael Berry's image of the commuters waiting for their ride.
