I plan on taking my two grandsons to the Twin Cities to watch trains on Saturday, August 10. We would like to watch trains at speed, rather than yard operations, etc. I will probably drive to Newport, since I am familiar with that area, and train frequency is usually pretty high.
I don’t have a smart phone, so that option is out. I do have an older hand-held scanner, but don’t know if that would still work with the bandwidth changes that have been made in recent years.
$64,000 Question: Is there a good way to tell when the highest train frequency will be?
It's busy just about all the time, with BNSF and CP trains. ATCS Monitor and using online scanners can help.
Old scanners work fine, just the volume will be a bit lower.
