UP'S SD70M'S
Posted by favuprailroadfan on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 3:06 PM

I need some help on this question. Recently I have seen UP 4702 come through Liberal Kansas, with radiator wings on the back. I know that these were used on UP 4535-4539 for emission tests, but are these now standard for the units? I have seen any units with them on there. Is this just another test unit? If so, how many are there in this series? I would really appreciate the help if anybody can give me some.

Thanks, Dru

I am Not sure on the numbers I was told it was 4710 and up with the flares, but all SD70 made after 1-1-02 will have the flares to add more cooling capacity to meet the new EPA tier 1 emissions standards. So other than the 3 test units you know when you see a SD70
with a flared radiator that it was made in 2002 or later .

Thanks for the help. I really appriciate it. Earlier this morning I saw UP 4850, and it also had the flares so I guess that these aren't just test units. Again thanks for the help. Keep watching.

Derek, I saw you on that train. It was pretty sweet looking. I bet you had a good run. You mentioned this earlier, that the rumor around is that the UP is going to get 750 more 70M's. Is this true? I am just wondering. I have also noticed that there hasn't been as much traffic through here. Why? I'll keep my eye out for ya.

I saw 5 brand new winged SD70M's on my way to Laredo, TX. This is a great place to see equipment since the line straddles IH35 from San Antonio to Laredo. The consist had 2 SD40-2 upfront with 5 brand spanking new SD70M's complete with the american flag logo. I wish I had a camera, it was a beautiful sight to hold. The new winged units are definitely production units as I had a chance to speak with an Engineer about the new units.

Hope this helps
