Long Island Rail Road

Why does the LIRR use the form Rail Road instead of Railroad?  The PRR had RR in its name but was still a Railroad.  Any other companies that are Rail Roads?

Rail Road as two words goes back to the original charter.  The Indiana Rail Road also uses that form, I believe that it is done to differentiate it from the Indiana Railroad, which was an interurban that was finally abandoned in 1941.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
