Identification of Parallel Canadian Rail Line
Posted by rjemery on Sunday, March 4, 2012 7:09 PM

The April, 2012, issue of Trains has a photo (p 16) of a VIA train on tracks near Port Hope, ON.  Running parallel and some yards away are another set of two tracks running more or less parallel.  My guess is that one set is of the CN (on which the VIA train runs) and the other is the CP.  Is that correct?

Also, do VIA trains run mostly on CN rails?  I know in the West some VIA trains run on CP rails.

I have yet to get the April Trains in the mail to see the photo, but in that area the CPR (single track with passing sidings) and the CNR (two main tracks) shadow each other.  VIA is mostly on CN lines or regional railways now, and even the regional railways are mostly CN spin-offs.

The one route that is entirely on CPR trackage is the RDC service between Sudbury and White River in Ontario.  There are two directional running districts, one in BC and one in Ontario, where VIA runs over CP in one direction but is considered as part of the CN traffic.

Hi All

CN Kingston Sub at this point is four tracks IIRC. GO Transit runs parallel 2 tracks to this sub as far as Oshawa which is west of Port Hope.
