Not a single shot of a train crew member with a cup of coffee?

Oh well...

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Yeah, I was looking for commuter crowds with coffee in one hand and a "commuter folded" newspaper in the other...not one in all of America!  Note, too, I don't look at the photog's name until after I have looked at the photo itself.  Without coffee, I find all of the equal as I squint into the sun of most pics.  Had to go with Andy's because it reminded me of a day in 1976 when I stood on a hill watching Ross Rowlan's Freedom Train with RDG's 2102 (?) creeping out of a morning fog down the Valley of the Tioga on the NYC's ex Pine Creek Canyon line from WIlliamsport heading to Corning and EL track with the string of display cars' lights punctuating the train's length.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

I quite liked Aaron's shot--it was crisp and the train was framed well. I almost gave the nod to Aaron; however, Elrond's image dramatically left no doubt as to what time of day it was. And since the theme is 'morning'....

I hardly ever cast a vote for these things, but I think the reader submission is the only one that says "morning" to me.  The rest look like they could have been taken in the evening as well.  The difference?  The mist/fog in the shot submitted by Mr. Lewis.  Mr Nanos may have some fog, but not enough to determine time of day, in my opinion.

Your results may vary.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

So many good, evocative shots this time!

I wound up with Elrond's as my choice, closely followed by darn near every other possibility.

Talk about a difficult decision.

Since I'm a dyed-in-the-wool "night owl" I seldom see morning...almost never anywhere near a railroad track.  I had to guess what a trackside morning shot ought to look like, and decided that Ken Fitzgerald's was most representative.

Seriously, I find it difficult to tell the difference between sunrise and sunset in photos.  In the event of an overcast, a shot could be almost any time of the day.

So, my primary thought was that "morning" wasn't a particularly good choice for subject matter.

Aside from that, I liked the submissions...regardless of what time of the day they were captured.

The choices this week were many.  For once I read the stories that went along with the pictures, after reading the stories I seemed to understand the shot a little bit better. that is why I say the choices were many.  The decision that I finally made was to vote for the "reader', there were others that I enjoyed just as well so good work to you all.Smile

Like Zug, I felt many of the shots could have been sunsets as well.

I liked Aaron's shot - it's a vision of morning and a sunrise that I've seen many times.  The color of the light was different than one usually sees in the evening.

Nice photos!

Elrond's is my favorite. Seems to catch the 'Morning' a little better.

Many thanks to those of you who have voted for my shot. I will echo what others said (and I did in my description) I chose my shot, because of the fog. It's obviously morning, unlike most, if not all, of the others.

.....My selection is the BNSF double stack  photo of Elrond's in the early morning sunlight.  There were plenty of very nice, scenic, railroad themed photos to choose from this time.

Reason...?  Believe the one chosen just seemed to be a bit more impressive for a rail photo in that morning sun.

Drew got my vote this time...Alex was a close second.  Several interesting shots interpreting "dark skies"...an interesting study.

They just kept getting better each one I came to.  I was starting to think that this isn't going to be easy to vote for just one.  I liked the colouring of Don's but seemed more like night time to me.  Andy's had too much scenery and with the hump in the middle hid a lot of the train.  I liked Alex's but to me that also said night time.  I also liked Tom's but again couldn't really tell what time of the day it was.  Drew's was the last one I looked at and got most of my attention.  That was the one I voted for even though I still couldn't really tell what time of day it was by looking at the photo.  I really ended up with the one that caught my eye the most.  I thought too that most went for storms rather than what time of day it was.

I'm commenting on the roadside running contest! Halverson's was the only true roadside running photo,,,I mean it was in the road for god's sake! Laughs! Yea I don't know what roadside running really means either! In the road running, roadside running, street running, street sharing maybe would have been more explicit or descriptive. Guess what they really meant was next to the road!!
