UP mainline in Oregon down?
Posted by NP Red on Monday, July 19, 2010 3:11 PM

Does anybody know why the Main north-south UP line was or is out of service in Oregon. It was closed for at lease 12 hours Sunday. They finally got an Amtrack through late last night. I still hear not trains today if I am listening correctly. One waiting passenger said there was a problem near Eugene, OR Was there a derailment or slide?  Any ideas.

I haven't heard anything specifically relating to a railroad closure; but there was a small wildfire near Westfir last night. It's possible that was close enough to the railroad to cause a closure.

(edit) After some poking around on local news sites and Google maps I suspect the culprit may actually have been a different brush fire at the edge of Oakridge. Ten acres; and from the description and map almost certainly adjacent to and possibly across the railroad.
