[/quote]   They have tended to be standard gauge because its application advantage has grown to extend beyond the need for interchange compatibility, and on to the benefit of standard off-the-shelf components being the lowest cost compared to customized components.   There is a very heavy duty 3-foot-gauge railroad in Columbia that I don’t know much about, but it would be interesting to learn its history and why it is narrow gauge.  Maybe somebody has some information about it.
