Roodhouse, which is a few towns north of Carrollton, was where the Alton's branch to Kansas City (Western Division) begins. When the GM&O bought the C&A, then the Illinois Central merged with the GM&O in the '70s, ICG didn't want the extra trackage. The Chicago-St.Louis main was sold to the SSW-SP, while the Western Division and the Springfield-Godfrey branch was sold to a startup company called the Gateway Western. In 1997 KCS bought the GWW, and still owns it today. I think BNSF has trackage rights from Jacksonville to Alton, too.
