Trains articles need more maps
Posted by Boyd on Friday, March 5, 2010 1:00 AM

Reading in the last article about the shortline out east there was lots of description about a trains route on the line, but the map was poor. I can get lost without digging out a map I can easily get lost reading an article. I'm not always near a computer to lookup a corresponding map. Could they have mini maps placed throughout an article so its easier to follow? I usually like reading trains articles but it could be improved.

I too agree that on SOME articles they do need more maps. In some cases I too get confused. However, in Trains’ defense, it can be VERY hard to compile info need for an accurate map no matter how small the map area. I watched the “Meet the Staff.” video on Trains Tube. They say that the Map of the Month is the hardest part of the magazine to do. (I have to hand it to the boy’s in the maps dept., I love the map of the month! I look forward to it every month!) I f you throw in a bunch of little maps, that’s even harder to do.

Ink on paper costs a lot more than electrons you see here. It is not just magazines. Many railroad historical societies put up a web site with maybe one poor map such as found on the back of an old passenger timetable.

The write must never assume the audience is 5% as well informed at they are. A magazine with a web site should do the www..... for a detailed map. Hits can be sold to advertisers the same as column inches.

As Meredith Wilson put in it the song Rock Island from the Music Man, "Ya gotta know the territory." There is no better way than a good map.
