Posted by wilmette2210 on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 12:28 AM

Hi, I have noticed a switch engine in the UP North Avenue yard with the words,"Chicago Terminal Railroad," what is the Chicago Terminal Railroad and dose it serve all of CP's former customers? Please let me know thank you.

Moments ago I made a Wikipedia check of the Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad.  Wikipedia states the B.& O.C.T. RR. is now controlled by "CSX Corporation."

Perhaps what you saw is a B.& O.C.T. locomotive with a badly worn paint job.

--------------------------------------------------------

SUGGESTION TO EVERYONE:  In my travels around the country I've seen plenty of industrial installations such as grain elevators and short lines that use locomotives whose car bodies are still painted the colors of the most recent Class 1 or Class 2 carrier that owned it.  Sometimes the name of that railroad still appears on the long hood.  But if you look carefully underneath the side window next to where the engineer or conductor sits you may find the initials of the actual owner or lessor.

Supply the General Discussion threads with the initials and number of what you saw, plus the date and location, and invariably someone reading your message can tell you what it's all about.

Cheers!

Yes, the Chicago Terminal Railroad (CTM) served all of the former CP customers in that area (east of Pacific Junction, IIRC). It also has leased the UP trackage in Elk Grove Village, and serves them as well. (A former UP CRO works for them, but I don't know at which location or in what capacity.)

Engine is leased from ILSX.  Painted in Horicon.

Carl:

What is CRO?

Also, does UP still have the yard in EGV?  Or is that now CTM?

Carl:

What is CRO?   The unit at Elk Grove is ILSX 1396, a geep 7/9 rebuild type in a nice burgandy scheme.

How much business is still in EGV?  That is a huge industrial park with a nice network of rail spurs, but not sure how much business in the villiage.

This website will answer all your questions on the portion of the Chicago Terminal Railroad you were referring to by that UP yard by the Kennedy Expressway:

Sometime last week Carl/ CShaveRR had a post with a link to a railfan website for Chicago short line railroads - different from the Northside Switching website above, I believe - one being the CTR.  I'll try to find it tomorrow sometime and post it here.

It is one of Ed Ellis' Iowa Pacific railroads.  The link on the site above will get a map of the Chicago Terminal Operation.  Iowa Pacific was the company that wanted to restart the Ski Train out of Denver but had problems closing the necessary deal with Amtrak.

From the 'Shortlines of Chicago Historical Society' webpage, at -

Credit for the initial website reference correct should go to PParea - http://cs.trains.com/trccs/members/PParea.aspx

Thanks for that link.

Ed, CRO is my job--Car Retarder Operator. Definitely not the capacity this guy's in now (but I don't really know what he is doing).

As for business, I'm sure a lot of those spurs in there never see a car. But I don't know that much about the active industries. We manage to fill up an Elk Grove track in our yard pretty much every day, but not all of that goes to the CTM. We have a couple of jobs that still work in the area.

All three of the engines listed on the one link were painted in Horicon.

I guess a phone call was made one day, and the 1396 got relettered.

The Baltimore  And Ohio Terminal Railroad Has Been A Terminal Railroad Which Would Work Around Chicago Heights And Has No Connection With The Chicago Terminal Railroad.

The Chicago Terminal Railroad Purchased The CP Line Around Goose Island In January Of 2007 Which The Railroad Would Service Each Former CP Customer That Is The Few That Are Left.

CP Left About A Dozen Or So Customers To The Chicago Terminal Railroad Which The Terminal Railroad Took Horrible Care Of The Line And Almost West Bankrupt So They Purchased A Branch Line In Bensenvillle And Elk Grove Village And Left That To Crap As Well With Some Customers Around.

The Chicago Terminal Railroad Goose Island Line Where The Train Would Be Located At The North Avenue Yard Would Service A Scrap Yard And A Lumber Business Tuesday And Thursday With 2 Cars For Each Customer.

I Have Driven Past The North Avenue Yard Once In A While And Have Drived Around Goose Island Where The Chicago Terminal Railroad Would Do Business On The Chicago And Evanston Line (2 Miles).

I Have Learned More From Wiki And The CTR Owner Known As Iowa Pacific Hold And More.

The B&OCT had a much wider range than Chicage Heights.
