Berea Ohio CSX Main Question
Posted by wrawroacx on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 9:12 PM

I have a question about the CSX main through Berea Ohio, since I go there a lot during the year. The question I want to ask is part of this video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKv3mLaY6ps&feature=channel_page by Conrailforever. This is not my account and this is not my video. The question is, did the CSX main increase there track speed through here because the trains at the 1:21 mark and the 1:55 mark seem to be speeding to fast through here. They look like to me they were going 65 to 70 MPH. Now I've been to Berea countless times and have not seen to many trains go that speed through here. I have seen some though that were going very fast. One time 2 years ago, a CSX Intermodal train, during December, came through at about 70 MPH lead by a CSX AC6000 going Eastbound. Now that's to fast through a residential area, in my opinion. I just want to know if the CSX Main is still 60 MPH because the two trains in that video looked alot faster then 60. Also, I notice in the video, some of the NS trains were kind of speeding to. By the way, Nice Video.

it is 60-70 miles per hour. 60 mph when a train is 1300 ft long and 70mph if the train is less than 1300 ft long depending on were the signals are.

 Wrawroacx,

It's Rich. I too, have been going to Berea countless times over the past decade. Probably more times than I'm willing to admit. But that's beside the point. According to a currently furloughed conductor that I have spoken to, and hung out with before - Patrick Lynch - trackspeed through Berea for intermodal traffic on Main 2 is 60 MPH. Freight is 50 and passenger is 70. It has always been this way, and probably will always stay that way.

I highly doubt that trains are going 70+ like you claim. Overspeed is set at 70 MPH on CSX locomotives, and the curve, titled "Abbeyshire Curve", in the distance to the west from the Berea hotspot, is only good for 65 MPH movements. It is possible that the last several times you attended Berea, there may have been slow orders, speed restrictions or etc, due to the Front St bridge construction. But I have video of intermodal hotshots cranking it out at around 60 MPH, back in 2005. It's not something recent.

Westbounds are a different story. Intermodal traffic on Main 2 is good for 50 MPH, due to all of the switches, turnouts, etc. Mixed freights are good for 40, and passenger trains 60. This has always been the speed for westbounds since I started attending Berea.

All Norfolk Southern traffic through Berea is rated 40 MPH, except for Amtrak, which is rated at 50 MPH. And BTW, I will tell Cody that his video is getting some "fame" from the trains.com forums. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to hear that.

Do any passenger trains take the CSX main because I have never seen Amtrak on this line. I have seen Amtrak and the NS OLS on the NS main. I have just never seen a passenger train on the CSX main.

CSX Office car trains operate at Passenger Train Speeds.

There is such a thing as Office Car Specials on CSX too, wrawroacx. Not to mention the occasional Circus Train (which passed through this past week). And soon enough, there will be experimental Amtrak runs, operating between Cleveland and Cincinnati.....This will be part of the "Buckeye Corridor", if the plan doesn't fall through. I'll believe these Amtrak trains will exist, on the second day that I see them run....

EDIT - You also think that these trains are going too fast? It's not the railroad's job to lower track speeds, due to lack of common sense. If you see that a train is coming, and stay clear, then what is the problem with them going fast? Also, how slow do you want them to go? You said that some of the NS trains were speeding!? 40 MPH is actually relatively slow for a mainline. The reason they do 40 through here, is because of all of the turnouts, crossovers, switches, etc. I'd hate to see what you think once the NS trains went around the corner into Olmsted Falls, and kicked it up to 60.

Flatly - if the crew is caught "speeding", then they will be handled, as appropriate, by their respective road foreman, or supervisor, etc. A fine can be issued to the faulty crew as well (sometimes as much as $5,000 I hear, although that may be misinformation). Most locomotives nowadays run on an 83:20 gear ratio, which allows them to go 70, and not much more. If they hit the 74 or 75 mark, then the engine governor will kick in, and apply a Penalty application, in which the train will go into emergency. I think you'd know it if a train was truly speeding....

I have a post about the Circus Train. I have seen NS in Olmsted Falls go up to 60 MPH. When do you think they will start running experiment Amtrak's, on the CSX Main?

I've been at Utica (NY) Union Station (on the "Chicago" line) many times as intermodals and the like blow through.  60 wouldn't surprise me.  Amtrak stops there, so I usually see them stopping, standing, or starting...

I have to agree with Wabash.  None of these trains look as though they were even getting close to 60MPH, let alone 70 MPH.
