Under Amtrak reservations, look for Rail Sale. It lists all the discounted routes featured by Amtrak. We watched this source from Jan, on, until we found great fares on the route we wanted, the Southwest Chief. The wife and I got a round trip coach fare for $260 for both of us between Galesburg IL and Flagstaff AZ. Traveled between 3 and 15 March. Once on board, we upgraded to sleeper for $100 more, plus they threw in free dining car meals. I think the Chief is now off the Rail Sale list, but there are many other routes with cheap fares.
