What is that Nora, a snowplow?

Why is it so long?

Snowplow...it is long because it has blades underneath it to flange the snow away from the track that can be folded out...we have never had to use one here...we have had to hook a few 6 axle units together to run after freezing rain to brak the ice off the railheads. We call these "ice breaker specials". What do ya think about the below photo? Frisco 1522 on September 28, 2002 during the 4-8-2's last runs. I took the picture at Sullivan, Missouri.

The picture I posted is what I was told is called a jordan spreader, which they do use as a snowplow. But this photo was taken in late April, and they've been using it right around here to push dirt and branches and stuff off the tracks. Not sure why the dirt, branches, etc. were there -- they said something about a new ditch being dug and the debris ending up on the tracks?

Zach, I think that is a terrific photo. But, you know, it's too small. Hahahaha!

Re: Doggy. Well you know, I did suggest remedial english or english-as-a-third language courses for him, and really, his forum mouth did obscure his face. It's when others (finally!!!) joined me that the Dogs was sent a yippin'. It was fun back then, advising Doggy and provoking his ally Kevin by posting stuff just strange enough to put a lever under their risibles. Peace now with the rrman, but Kev where IS he? Summer school I hope!!!
Anyway Doggy, come back a little sadder, more enthusiastic, less number-of-postings oriented, and slowed enough to be thoughtful.

Jordan Spreader. Can be used as a snow plow (SP and UP use them that way) since they can move the snow away from the tracks instead of just plowing a canyon through the snow.

Also (and mainly) used on Mof W work to push dirt and rock sideways and the wings (shown here folded up against the spreader frame - which is why it is sooooo long) are articulated so it can be used to shape the roadbed edges. Some of the ones we used in Oregon and California had wings 30 feet long, but most are 15-20 feet, I think.

That's an interesting photo. For one look at the sharp curve it's on. Looks like model railroading. The other thing look at the signals. rather interesting, because it looks like they aren't in use anymore.
