"The Truth about Trains"

I'm sure many of you have, by now, had an opportunity to read this article in the current issue.

Thoughts? were there any revelations in this for any of us?

I thought it was a wonderfull section of the magazine. It kind of suprised me that barges are more fuel efficant than trains, but after pondering the subject it now makes scence to me. I was a bit confused on the section "Do Trains Haul More freight than Trucks?" I know that one train is going to haul more freight than one truck, but what about overall. I guess some of that stuff is a little over my head. The finacial stuff.

One train hauls more freight than one truck...but there's a whole lot more trucks in the US than there are trains!

I've already sent a letter to TRAINS' Railway Post Office section about the section on railroad jargon becoming part of everyday language... The author totally forgot about how the term "Red Carpet Treatment" refers to the New York Central's practice of rolling out a red carpet on the platform when the 20th Century Limited called at Grand Central Terminal in New York (and possibly at Chicago, I don't know) for the passengers.

I'm stuck by how trashy the cover of the magazine is.

Is it possible they could sell the same number of magazines with an uncluttered cover showing off a dramatic photograph?

TrainMan TY: This is a bit off topic but you bring up red carpet service. You may find it interesting that United Airlines referred to their first class service as Red Carpet service and they referred to their aircraft as Mainliners. They did this throughout the 1950's & 1960's. Aricat

I'd just call it "BUSY!"  And hope it is just a trial baloon,  not a permanent change in graphic style.  I still read it cover to cover!Smile,Wink, & Grin
